República dos Inkas Association

Shop History

Rooted in the University of Coimbra living culture and, consequently, in the history of the city itself, the República dos Inkas Association integrates a group of university residences sheltering the student community, institutionally linked to the University of Coimbra. Founded in 1954, this república had its high moment in the local history when, during the academic crisis in 1969, was responsible for intercepting the PIDE [the dictatorship police] communications during the University exams strike. The República dos Inkas members were deep opponents of the Estado Novo Regime and there are many stories passed down proudly from generation to generation.

Products and Services

True replacement communities, alternative households from those left in hometown, the Repúblicas (communal houses for students) are more than just student or university residences, representing the traditional academic life of Coimbra, with all that this entails, from the bohemian life to the ideological aspects.
