The Shop
The building, rectangular, in the shape of a corridor, is filled with hundreds of small boxes. Botónia sells buttons made from pearl, glass, Swarovski crystal (The cheapest can be bought for €75/each), clasps (that can cost up to €150), as well as trims, sequins, things for ballroom dancing and wedding dresses.
Shop History
Botónia was probably established in the year the film maker Manoel de Oliveira was born: 1908. “Probably”, because there is no certainty with regards to the opening of this specialist store filled with all kinds of buttons. The first records on the place are from 1936. The buttons come from Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. The oldest are protected and safely kept, but it is possible to see, inside the shop, many antique and vintage products. It is here, by the way, where many Portuguese stylists, such as Nuno Baltazar, Nuno Gama and Carlos Gil, come in search of buttons. But not only them. Fashion designers of beautiful women clothing supply themselves here, too. That is to say, there are, for sure, buttons from Botónia spread throughout the world in all kinds of clothing and accessories (in the form of earrings and rings).
The personalized customer service continues to be one the most valuable things about this company.
