The Shop

The grocery store Casa Portuguesa, known in the community by the grocery store Batepézinho, is a traditional grocery store that sells since 1908. However, since 1965 it has been operating at this address. The establishment, which already runs the third generation behind the counter, remains loyal to its service and to the traditionality of its articles, and here you will find articles that cannot be found in supermarkets. In 2011, the shop was refurbished by the current owner, grandson of the founder, who renovated it, in a contemporary environment without losing its traditional character.

Shop History

The owner, Manuel António Guerreiro, inherited the name from his grandfather, founder of the business. He tells us that up to the present location, the grocery store has known three places: it began its work at the Vale Telheiro site, next to the quarry, in 1908. After two years, he settled on Avenida José da Costa Mealha. Two or three years after and he moved again: for 52 years he worked in the place where Linadel is now located. At first it wasn’t easy, remembers his father Francisco Miguel Guerreiro, at the age of 89. The implantation of the municipal market didn’t attract the clientele to that new commercial area, which led to some doors having to close. The people were accustomed to purchase on the down size of the town, between the Bernardo Lopes Square and the Chafariz Square. It was worth the slow change in habits. There grew up the children of the founder, known as Bate-pezinho – a nickname inherited from his father, an excellent dancer who accompanied the chords of music with the beating of his foot. Already in their majority, and following the profession of their father, the brothers take over the business in society. In 1965, they moved the establishment to number 18 on Rua José Fernandes Guerreiro, where it still is today.
