Shop History

The Real República Ay-Ó-Linda was founded in 1951, but already existed since 1949 under the name of Real República Mija-Gato.
The Real República Ay-Ó-Linda integrates a group of academic residences that accommodate students, acknowledged by the Rectorate of Coimbra University. This República has a close connection with the academic world because one of the essential requirements for belonging to this República is to be enrolled in a university institution. Besides the official recognition, the residents of the Real República Ay-Ó-Linda regularly publish academic articles, for instance in the university’s official magazine “Revista da Universidade de Coimbra”.
Many underprivileged students manage to stay and study in Coimbra due to the existence of the Real República Ay-Ó-Linda, because it is an alternative to the university residences.
Nowadays, the Real República Ay-Ó-Linda members have the status of association leaders due to their presence in the Real República Ay-Ó-Linda’s Board (youth association acknowledged by the Youth Portuguese Institute in 1989), maintaining in contact present and former members of the República.

Products and Services

True replacement communities, alternative households from those left in hometown, the Repúblicas (communal houses for students) are more than just student or university residences, representing the traditional academic life of Coimbra, with all that this entails, from the bohemian life to the ideological aspects.
