Shop History
The house of José Rosas & C.ª is one of the oldest jewellery establishments in the country, having its most distant origin, in Porto, through the referred figure of Vicente Manuel de Moura. His son-in-law, José Aires da Silva Rosas, came to develop the commerce of jewellery, both with the execution of silver pieces and that of jewels. The establishment was located in the Rua das Flores, the street where one could find the main goldsmiths, still on the second half of the XIX century. In the transition from the XIX to the XX century, this jewellery made exhibitions and edited catalogues of the pieces it sold, thus enabling not only the dissemination of the objects, but also, currently, the precise knowledge of the pieces it sold. It would be, however, his son José Rosas Júnior (1885-1958), who would most come to influence the Portuguese goldsmithery. With a refined taste and influenced by London and Paris, where he studied, he would make this establishment in Portugal one of the most important on the country. José Rosas Júnior contacted, from a very early age, with a circle of friendships of his parents, among which there were names of the Arts of the time. The house continued with his son, Dr. Manuel Ramos Pinto Rosas, a biologist by training, but with a degree in Gemmology, in London. In the 70s, the commercial premises migrated to the area of Boavista, to Rua Eugénio de Castro, where it remains to this day.
