The Shop
Piriquita is considered a tourist spot in Sintra and a mandatory stop for tourists visiting the village of Sintra. It is difficult to resist the delicious smell coming from Rua das Padarias!
The place of origin is exactly the same as where Piriquita I works today, in the historic center of the village of Sintra.
The documents and photos displayed on the walls tell the story of the pastry shop, thus providing a historic, cozy and familiar atmosphere.
The balcony of the house is the best known place, where tourists and visitors place their orders to take the delights of Casa Piriquita home or to enjoy eating while walking the streets of the village.
The recipe for travesseiros remains secret within the family and has been for five generations!
Casa Piriquita is considered a family success, managed today by the fifth generation, which keeps the tradition of Sintra’s queijadas and travesseiros alive.
Shop History
The bakery that would later be known as Piriquita was founded in 1862, some 160 years ago by Amaro dos Santos, a baker by profession and his wife Constância Gomes, who worked there.
The name Piriquita comes from the nickname that King D. Carlos I gave Constância Gomes, based on his short stature. It was King D. Carlos I who encouraged the couple to make the famous Queijadas, a sweet that they enjoyed during their summers in Sintra. Success was immediate and the bakery quickly became a pastry shop.
Over the 160 years, a lot has changed but a lot has remained the same, such as the quality of the products made and the family itself that is dedicated to serving its customers from all over the world. In the 1940s, while much of the world was falling apart, a new treasure was born in Sintra. Constância Luísa Cunha, the founder’s daughter developed Travesseiro, a pastry filled with egg candy and with an almond touch, but with the secret so well kept that only the direct family has access to the filling recipe.
Today, in the fifth generation, this is a rare case of survival of a family project.
