The Shop

The great attraction of the Leitaria da Quinta do Paço is the éclair, the ex-libris of this brand. However, the ‘Bola de Berlim’ (balls of cream-filled dough, sliced in half around the middle and filled with an egg-based cream typical in Portuguese desserts) and the ‘chantilly’ (whipped cream) sold in portions comes soon after. Butter, cheese, yoghurts and dairy desserts are other dairy products on display in the dairy shop windows.

Shop History

The century-old Leitaria da Quinta do Paço was born in 1920, in Paços de Ferreira, and became known as the first company in the sector to distribute pasteurised milk in glass bottles in the north of the country, later selling butter, cheese and yoghurt. In the 1950s, due to the industrialisation of the sector, the sale was no longer made in markets or door-to-door, and a point of sale was opened at Praça Guilherme Gomes Fernandes. The queues follow, above all, to buy the new white cream sold in waxed paper bags – the whipped cream. In the following decade, the founder, Alexandre Furtado Mendonça, travels to Switzerland, where he discovers the éclair, stuffed with whipped cream, and decides to reproduce the recipe in Porto. The rest, one can say, is history. The recognition of the quality of his products by the public allowed the success of the brand and today it has several open spaces, from the north to the south of the country.
