Shop History

The continuity of its family structure allowed to preserve memories, recipes and knowledge of generations. The history of “Casa Costinhas” begins more than 100 years ago with Maria Ribeiro Costa and Adelina Ribeiro Costa, the first owners of "Casa Costinhas". The two sisters, after being orphaned, were welcomed into the Convent of Santa Clara. It was here, along with the Poor Clair nuns, masters in the art of pastry, that they received the teachings and recipes that made the "Casa Costinhas" famous. The law of the "mata-frades" of 1834, which declared extinct "all convents, monasteries, colleges, hospices and any other houses of the regular religious orders", which forced the nuns, and the two sisters, to leave the Convent of Santa Clara. After a difficult first few times they settled in a house near the convent, where they began to make the sweets, they had learned from the Poor Clares of Santa Clara. Although they barely knew how to write ther own name, they had a huge amount of experience gained in making the recepies from memory. The knowledge and recipes were passed, first to a niece, Olivia who then passed all the knowledge to the younger sister, Elvira. After the death of the "Aunts" Maria Elvira was responsible for the continuity of some of the most famous recipes of the traditional confectionery Vimaranense, of which deserve special mention the "Toucinho do Céu de Guimarães" and the no less famous "Tortas de Guimarães".
