The Corsário das Ilhas Royal Association was founded in 1958. The history that binds the Corsário das Ilhas Royal Association to the Academy passes strongly through the great involvement of this Republic in the academic crises of 62 and 69. The fence and the wall of the house, that the “Corsário das Ilhas” Republic share with their neighbours, have paintings showing the events that took place during the various crises.
Those who lived in the Corsário das Ilhas Royal Association remember, for example, Carlos Candal, the former socialist MEP, who in 1962, period of academic crisis, was the president of Coimbra´s Academic Association. In turn, Carlos Fraião stands out for having been a member of the Portuguese Communist Central Committee. He was also president of the DG/AAC from 1970 to 1971, just before being arrested. The presence of influential personalities, who have passed through this house, contributes to making it part of the history of the city of Coimbra.
