The Shop

The Lazza Hotel is located in a corner building, between Travessa Nova and Rua Dr. Francisco António Dinis, in a building that once belonged to a large family house – the Águas Pinto – and with a project by João Maria de Assunção Costa, dated 1922.
In 1958 the property was bought from D. Aurora Águas Pinto Antunes, widow of Jorge Carvalho Mesquita, by José Maria Lázaro. In 1964 the new owner transformed it into the Rio-Mar Pension, a hotel establishment that would accompany the golden age of the city as a bathing resort. Countless Portuguese and Spanish families stayed at the Pensão Rio-Mar, and for 40 years it has maintained the tradition of welcoming guests during the bathing season.
In 2010, the Rio-Mar Pension gives way to the Lazza Hotel, a name that intends to honour the first owner who still attends this moment, having passed away one year later.

Shop History

Today, this Hotel presents a totally renewed interior image, but it still makes reference to its past. The current owners have tried to recover and maintain some other elements of the old Rio-Mar Pension with their integration in the current space – such as objects linked to the exercise of its activity and now in disuse, like the old typewriter, acquired in the 70’s, by the founder, a scale of weights, acquired in the early 60’s to help in the part of the restoration and, in the breakfast room the tables and chairs of the Rio-Mar Pension are kept.
They have also restored a wooden door with white and blue glass, which still belonged to the original 19th century building, and which today functions as a decorative element, of memory and identity. In the entrance hall, where there is also a beautiful china cabinet, it is possible to learn about the history of the founder through an informative support.
Also on display are José Maria Lázaro’s personal stamp collection, which he has collected since 1960, the letters he received from domestic and foreign guests and drawings by the Figueirense artist Tesha.
