Real República Boa-Bay-Ela Association
Shop History
The República Boa-Bay-Ela was founded in 1956 and has always been a place that contributed to the enrichment of the social, economic and cultural areas of Coimbra, being a material testimony of the local history.
During the Estado Novo period, many of its residents were fighting for democracy through its work in the various commissions in the Coimbra Academic Association, namely by being participating in the students’ demonstrations against the regime. This República also sheltered the singer Zeca Afonso, hiding away from the political police (PIDE). He described it in the poem written with his own hands in one of the room’s wall, preserved until today.
Since its foundation, the Real República Boa-Bay-Ela facilities received several visits and held many ceremonies, promoted by local and international entities. Many international renowned characters, from Science to Arts, came to this house, namely Dr. Christiaan Neethling Barnard, the writer Wolf Biermann or the actor Fernandel.
