Real República dos Pyn-Güyns Association

Shop History

Rooted in the University of Coimbra living culture and, consequently, in the history of the city itself, the Real República dos Pyn-Güyns Association integrates a group of university residences sheltering the student community, institutionally linked to the University of Coimbra. Founded in 1954, had a great impact in the local history. One of its founders also founded the Academic Museum of Coimbra. During the Academic Crisis, in 1969, it was in the dining room of the República dos Pyn-Güyns that many meetings took place, namely the strategic meeting in September 1986: about 15 students discussed and approved a new strategy for the student movement in Coimbra whose goal was a New University. Alberto Martins, President of the Board of the Coimbra Student Union and a member of the Real República dos Pyn-Güyns was a striking figure of the student protests. Many of the students actively participating in those protests in the 60s lived in the Real República dos Pyn-Güyns, such as Januário Pinheiro, Décio Sousa, José Bandeira, Baltazar Ribeiro, Rui Namorado, José Cândido Rodrigues, Rui Jorge, Luís Namorado, Augusto de Vasconcelos, Alberto Martins and Jorge Ventura.

True replacement communities, alternative households from those left in hometown, the Repúblicas (communal houses for students) are more than just student or university residences, representing the traditional academic life of Coimbra, with all that this entails, from the bohemian life to the ideological aspects.
