The Shop

The Ibn Errik Rex Bar is located on the main street of Óbidos.
There are many personal and emotional memories associated with this bar which, once an antique shop, brought together foreigners and many locals who, in this space, found an alternative to the taverns that have since disappeared. Here, the socialising was more eloquent, bolder and surprising. The host always had something new to share. He told fascinating stories about the many travellers who had come to the town in the 1950s, staying overnight at the Pousada do Castelo.
The establishment’s façade is sober and reflects a historical language. Its interior, adorned with murals, inlaid ceramics, antiques and many old bottles, has an intimate charm, steeped in history, making it a very cosy refuge on hot or rainy days or when the street is full of visitors.
The bar is modest in its offer. It’s not a place for fast consumption, but rather a bar that invites you to take your time to enjoy, savour and chat. The cherry liqueur stands out from the other simple drinks. The delicacies consist of cheese and roast chorizo, the latter being an interactive experience for the customer, who is invited to control the cooking of the chorizo in the clay dish, under the supervision of the manager who guides and finalises the process. This strategy favours a good conversation between the two, if the bar is not too crowded.

Shop History

It was once a very famous antique shop that housed pieces with amazing stories, such as an image of Our Lady of Fatima from the 17th century, swords of 1st King of Portugal and two skulls of Napoleon (one as an adult and one as a child). Genius stories, clever tricks by Mr. Montez (the owner), though some people were taken in by them. The truth is that his commercial vision and controversial talent earned him a pretty penny at the time and established him as an excellent storyteller, perhaps ever since he opened the business in 1956.
He would buy obsolete or little-used objects from local residents for a fraction of their true value. Then he would work on them or strategically place them alongside other works of art to increase their worth.
To make the sale even more enticing, Mr. Montez would seduce his customers with his home-made sour cherry liqueur. With eccentric tales and a full glass, he made his customers drunk on consolation. And so the business flourished.
When he sold the business in 1975 to the current owner, Mr. António Tavares, the antique shop had already undergone a turnaround. The sale of “ginjinha” (the cherry liqueur) had become more lucrative. So the antiques shop became a bar which, in turn, incorporated some decorative objects from the previous business.
