The Shop

Due to its antiquity and tradition, this space is continuously frequented by the local population, predominantly male, who share stories of their daily lives while recalling the local memories of this place, thus maintaining a lasting connection that is passed down through generations (grandparents, parents, and children).
It was also in this establishment that several generations of barbers learned the trade, later opening their own businesses. Another feature of this space is the tradition of passing the trade from father to son, with Fernando Costa and Fernando Pedro Costa (respectively the son and grandson of Luís Costa) currently working here.

Shop History

According to existing photographic documentation, confirmed by oral tradition, at the end of the 19th century, a perfumery and "women’s cutting shop" operated here (figures 1 and 2).
This shop was replaced by Mr. João Bolas’ barbershop (late 19th century, early 20th century), where he trained several young men in the barbering trade, many of whom later opened their own establishments. According to reports, Mr. João Bolas is said to have passed away while shaving one of his clients, the local doctor Aires Pires de Carvalho.
After his death, the establishment passed to his sons António Bolas and Aires Bolas.
In 1959, Mr. Luís Costa began working at this establishment, eventually acquiring it in 1976. He worked here until 1995, when he handed it over to his son Fernando Costa, the current owner. Today, Fernando Costa and Fernando Pedro (father and son) work permanently at this barbershop, having both started their apprenticeship here and always worked in this space.
Specialized in beards and haircuts, this is a place that combines culture, history, and tradition, adapted to current stylistic demands.
