The Shop

Barbearia Moderna has been cutting hair, trimming beards and chatting since July 1951. It is installed on the ground floor of an interesting building of modern architectural lines that makes corner with the streets Bernardo Lopes and Maestro David de Sousa.
This barber shop is one of the oldest in the municipality of Figueira da Foz and has been in the same family for 4 generations and is already serving the 5th generation of families such as Belchior, Dr. Abílio Bastos and the family of the Hotel Costa de Prata.
Although today, in its interior, it has stalls of more current lines, it is one of the few barbershops that still retains its authenticity and originality, and its customers can still sit in the beautiful barber chairs of the time and you can still see the utensils of haircutting and shaving older, as well as the hand shower, marks of the time when there were not yet razors, electric hair cutting machines and the hair showers.

Shop History

Founded by Mr. Albuquerque in 1951, was later acquired in 1969 by Joaquim Sousa Martinho, born in 1938 and who has been working in this profession since he was 10 years old, making him the oldest barber practicing in Figueira da Foz and the one who has been practicing for more years.
A few years later, they created the partnership Martinho e Fernandes, of which Gonçalo Martinho, Joaquim Martinho’s son, is now a partner, having decided to follow his father’s profession.
This barbershop has an important meaning for the history of Figueira da Foz, with clients from all over the city and all generations, being this one of the oldest barbershops in Figueira da Foz.
Almost all the Presidents of the Municipal Council of Figueira da Foz, since April 25th 1974, have been its clients. It is also frequented by deputies and State Secretaries and it has already served the former President of the Assembly of the Republic Barbosa de Melo.
Here, the priests from Tavarede, Maiorca and Alhadas also used to shave the crown, which was the shaving of the hair on top of the head, in the shape of a circle that the priests used to wear.
Fifty years ago, when there were shows at the Casino, and there were not yet razors for shaving, there were illustrious people here like António Calvário, António Silva, Eugénio Salvador, Max, Nuno Salvação Barreto, forcado from Lisbon, Raúl Indipwo, Raul Solnado, Tarzan Taborda, Toni de Matos, and also the Trio Odemira.
