The Shop
Café Velasquez is, without a doubt, one of the most emblematic cafes in the north of the city of Porto, being a reference not only for residents of the surrounding areas, but for all Porto residents. It is a meeting point for football enthusiasts due to its proximity to Estádio do Dragão (formerly “Estadio das Antas”), home of the city’s club. In the book "Cafés do Porto" by César Santos Silva, it is mentioned that the place has become a true "Porto sanctuary", especially on game days at Estádio do Dragão – a tradition that dates back to the days of the previous stadium.
Furthermore, the café is a social place for customers from different spheres of society, including industry, commerce, politics and education.
Another notable feature of this commercial space is the existence of a kiosk inside, which stands out for its diversity of national and international publications, with a greater focus on themes such as architecture, art, decoration and lifestyle. It also offers the opportunity to purchase small toys and children’s magazines for the youngest members of the family.
Shop History
In 1970, Café Velasquez opened its doors at number 301 Praça Velasquez, also known as Praça do Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro.
Over the years, several partners have led Café Velasquez. In 1990, the Maçorano family entered the business, with Adriano Alfredo Maçorano, uncle of the current managing partners: António Manuel Maçorano Branco and Carlos Alberto Maçorano Branco, who have worked at the cafe since 1993 and 1995, respectively.
Products and Services
The most know house’s specialties stand out, are traditional sandwiches such as "prego do lombo", "prego em bolo do caco", and toasted bread "miritas". The preparation of dishes favors the use of local, regional and national ingredients. The bread used for the miritas, for example, is made in a wood oven and supplied by Padaria Oriental, an establishment also protected by "Porto de Tradição" Program.
