Domingos Alvão is a cornerstone in the field of Portuguese photography. A winner of various national and international prizes, the establishments work features in some of the most important periodicals in the world. The Casa Alvão was contacted by various entities to partake in photographic jobs of a large scale. The most well-known work done by the establishment came about through an order made by the Institute of Port Wine in 1933: a vast survey of the Douro territory, from which came a collection of unique photographs that now make up part of the national collection. Just as magnificent are the images captured in 1934, which made up part of the Portuguese colonial exhibit in Porto’s Palácio de Cristal. To visit this establishment is to visit the history of photography.

Shop History

The Casa Alvão was founded on the 2nd of January 1902 by photographer Domingos Alvão on 120 Rua de Santa Catarina, in the City of Porto.
This building had such great seasoned professionals as Domingos Alvão and his disciple and later manager Alvaro Cardoso Azevedo.
This establishment possesses property of rare value – the photographs taken by the maestro himself exhibited in various establishments, which delight tourists – namely in the Ex-Libris Magestic Café, which the typical tourist never fails to visit.
There are thousands of photographs possessing the signature of this professional, a figure at the forefront of the city of Porto, painting a picture of the decades upon decades of history that pertains to the city and the transformations that have went with them, with soul and liveliness which only the people of Porto have in order to produce such a sizeable work.
