The Shop

“Casa Biscaia” does not go unnoticed by those who pass by “Largo do Cravão”. It is impossible not to pay attention to the old advertising letters of the shop, which dedicates to the sale of parts and the assistance and / or repair of bicycles. This shop belongs to the same family for 84 years now.

Shop History

In 1935, António Biscaia founded his own company on Rua Silva e Sousa together with his wife, who was always by his side in business, place where they also used tolive.
In addition to the workshop they also had a stand. The workshop was open during the bathing season (from July to September) on Avenida 25 de Abril, where the “Praia Swimmingpool” and the “Grande Hotel” were located, and, further back, the “Costa de Prata” Hotel. The stand was, in turn, intended for renting bicycles and after the bathing season it was dismantled because as the current owner says: "During winter this was nobody’s zone"( “The city is a mausoleum”).
At that time,there were several competitors. However, they disappeared, remaining only two; “Biscaia” and “Alves Barbosa”, both from the same family.
The workshop moved to “Praça Velha”, where bicycle training was ahead and they opened the parts shop at Largo do Carvão nr. 9, 61 years ago, where the optician-watchmaker “H. Morais” used to be. The husband worked in the workshop and his wife in public service. However, his wife closed the shop when her husband got ill.
When Mr. António Biscaia died, his wife led the business and started to dominate completely all bicycle parts, an unusual case for a lady of those time. Currently, the shop belongs to his son, Vítor Biscaia who, as he says, is passionate about his job, dedicating himself to repairing and selling bicycle accessories since his childhood.
