The Shop
This shop tradition in the trade of different products: cod, dried fruits, teas and spices. Its name reflects the oriental essence that is intertwined with the wide range of items offered, a tradition of "fine grocery stores" of the time.
Specializing in the retail of food products, it stood out for selling certified regional products and oriental items, later expanding to macrobiotic and natural products and, more recently, meeting the needs of specific diets, such as gluten-free products.
Over the decades, Casa Chinesa has evolved, becoming a reference for the middle and upper classes, offering a wide range of national and international quality products: from different types of cod to preserves, regional sweets, wines, cheeses, legumes , dried fruits, spices and dietary products.
The store not only adapted to market trends, but also preserved its tradition, maintaining a home delivery service for old customers. The generational line of customers is preserved, with children and grandchildren frequenting the establishment.
Its ability to reinvent itself positions Casa Chinesa as a milestone in Porto’s commercial history, remaining a jewel of the city, always meeting the diversity of tastes and demands of its customers over the decades.
Shop History
Casa Chinesa, at number 343 Rua Sá da Bandeira, is a living piece of Porto’s history. After the construction of the Bolhão Market in 1914, where fresh products were sold, many non-fresh food traders established themselves in the surrounding streets, with grocery items that complemented the fresh products sold at the market. Thus, in the first half of the 20th century, this block was the largest shopping area in Porto and one of the largest in the country. It was in this context that Joaquim Mota Cardoso and Fernando Martins Carneiro da Silva, coming from Casa Villares, came together to create Casa Chinesa.
The glass building, designed by architect Eduardo Alves in 1917, became home to this emblematic store. In 1939, they acquired the majority of shares in the firm "Laureano Magarinho & Companhia, Lda.", transforming it into Mota & Silva, Lda. Growth continued, with the admission of Eugénio Gonçalves Teixeira in 1971 and, more recently, Daniel José Lemos Moreira, both heirs of the founders.
