The Shop
In the south tower of the Bolhão Market, on the corner of Rua Formosa and Rua Sá da Bandeira, once stood the International Sausage Shop, also known as the German Sausage Shop. However, it failed to conquer the inhabitants of Porto at the time and closed a few years after its opening. It was there that, in 1921, António Moreira da Silva founded Casa Hortícola.
Shop History
The business later passed into the hands of António Ferreira de Sousa, who has been behind the counter of Casa Hortícola since 1949, with impeccable suit and tie. His service became known by familiarity, advising on seeds, plants and bulbs with the wisdom of experience and the joy of receiving long-time friends like at home.
Both the interior and the façade of the shop benefited from the rehabilitation works of the Bolhão Market, maintaining the original aesthetic elegance. Inside the building we find the majestic lamp that illuminates the marble stucco, the washbasin that evokes the ancient function of the space, the tile panels and the numerous seed boxes and colored bulbs.
Casa Hortícola prides itself on its wide range of plant seeds and bulbs, providing a unique visual experience for gardening enthusiasts. Here, customers don’t just find products, but rather a heritage cultivated over time and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Each visit becomes an enriching and unique experience.
