The Shop
Escovaria de Belomonte is a shop, a workshop and a museum. Once you walk through the door, you see the colourful brooms hanging from the ceiling. At the store’s interior, you can observe the factory where artisanal brooms are made: with a needle that woovens small amounts of natural bristles across holes in wood and metal structures. The bristle is from goats, boars, horse’s hair and tail, pig, and there’s also a particular kind of fibre that is extracted from a Mexican cactus. The latter is mostly used to create brushes to wash dishes and polishing furniture.
Shop History
Escovaria de Belomonte is a family business, established in 1927 by the grandfather o the current owner, António Silva. It was established in Massarelos and only 13 years later it was moved to Rua de Belomonte, where it still has its opoen doors. From 2007 on, the owners show a concern for design; the products, in fact, acclimatize to the evolution of tastes and behaviours, but honour the tradition. Sérgio, great-grandson of the founder, is now taking care of the brand, publicity and managemet os social networks for this business. He is trying to conquer new publics and cliente and keep alive this unique place in Porto’s city and history.
