Bertrand is a bookstore and book publisher, operating in the same location in Coimbra for 50 years, with almost 3 centuries of history which is indissociable from the Portuguese literature and culture history. As referred in a book portraying its history, Bertrand “is an old lady with almost 250 years old (…) has had 11 names, was owned by 10 different owners and knew 4 different addresses”. It is unique in its way of living in society, unique with an immensely rich past. The Livraria Bertrand is considered an excellence bookstore reflected in its great social, cultural, historic and patrimonial relevance, placed in a noble area of the city of Coimbra, the Portagem Square.
Is also in this square, in the building where Livraria Bertrand is located (number 9), that worked the office of Doctor Adolfo Correia Rocha, the writer that used the pseudonym Miguel Torga, one of the most influent Portuguese poets from the 20th Century, nominated several times for the Nobel Prize.

Shop History

The history of Livraria Bertrand began in 1732 when its founder, Pedro Faure, opened the first bookstore in Lisbon, considered by the Guinness Book of Records the oldest operating bookstore in the world. Consequently, is also the oldest publishing group. Bertrand develops its editorial activity since the 18th Century, and by the end of the 19th Century, included about 1200 books of 800 authors. Is from this period the “Almanach Bertrand”, which first edition is from 1899 and is still published today.
Livraria Bertrand has an editorial catalogue with relevant Portuguese authors, namely Aquilino Ribeiro and Dinis Machado, among others, contributing to the dissemination of the Portuguese language and culture.
