Shop History

It was through the hands of the renowned pedagogue and writer, Américo da Silva Areal that the bookstore Livraria Asa was born, in 1967; he was also the founder of Edições Asa. In 2000, José Alves, an employee of Livraria Asa since its foundation, acquired the establishment and changed its name to its current name, Livraria José Alves. In 2015, his daughter, Maria de Fátima Marques Alves Miller, took over the management. The design of the building where the bookshop is located was designed by the renowned architect Júlio de Brito. The delicate and discreet design reflects the spirit of the period, also evident in its interior. The furniture and the interior space reinforce the shape of the building, highlighting the particular care taken in the design of the shelves and the web-shaped ceiling. In the 1980s, the bookshop was awarded several prestigious commercial prizes and had collaborations with foreign publishers. It has a loyal clientele, especially among teachers and students of the Porto Academia, and it is the supplier of several higher education establishments. Given its close relationship with the academic world, it is frequented by distinguished political and academic personalities from Porto. This bookshop fosters proximity with the public, supporting initiatives with diverse cultural and social aspects. It is one of the few technical bookshops which still remains in the city centre.
