The Shop

With more than 70 years of history, the O Pretinho do Japão is a reference in the traditional commerce of the city, especially in the commercialisation of ground coffee and dried cod. There, other high quality products are sold, such as teas, dried fruits, wines, tinned products, cannery, among others. The shop has kept the original coffee mills and scales, innovating with the introduction of new products and trying to adapt to the demand and needs of new customers. More than a traditional grocery store, the space now includes a restaurant/cafeteria with tables outside, where various events are promoted, related to gastronomy, culture, music, arts and entertainment.

Shop History

The O Pretinho do Japão, inaugurated in 1947, is an ex-libris of the traditional commerce of Porto, selling many products of the region and specialising in the commercialisation of coffee beans, grounded in the store, before the customers, and cod. Times went by, the shop kept its name of origin, a trademark registered still by the Department of Industrial Property of the Ministry for Economy. The O Pretinho do Japão has grown, giving colour to some pages of the social media, namely the newspaper Jornal de Notícias and the magazines Visão and Time Out. Recently inserted in the tourism guide of Stay Oporto, it maintains, at the shop, the scales and the mills used since its opening and all the material used at that time, as well as other decorative elements. Today, it focuses on the commercialisation of wines and tinned products. It is a bastion of the traditional commerce of Porto, being a reference for the inhabitants of the city, but also for visitors who come from abroad.
