Shop History

The Padaria Formosa has over 100 years of history and maintains the traditional manufacturing processes of some of the most iconic products of Portuguese bakery. It has been located at Rua de Gondarém n.º 362 since 1875, and there you can find “pão-de-ló” (similar to sponge cake), “bolo-rei” (a festive cake in the shape of a crown, which is part of Portuguese tradition and is typically eaten during the Christmas season and on the Three Kings’ Day. It contains candied fruit and some dried fruit.), “fogaça” (a sweet bread that results from a vow to Saint Sebastian and is the basis for the Fogaceiras Festival, which takes place annually on 20 January in Santa Maria da Feira, in Portugal. Its shape alludes to the towers of the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira.) and many other delicacies which delight everyone. But the offer at Padaria Formosa is not only limited to sweets. The breads are equally delicious, with some varieties baked in wood-burning ovens, like the corn bread. And the “Bolas de Berlim” (doughnut with no central hole filled with a pastry cream, made from sweet yeast dough fried in lard or cooking oil, with a jam filling, and usually covered in powdered or conventional sugar.), one of the icons of Portuguese pastry, are baked in the oven instead of fried, which gives them a unique texture and flavour.
