LUSITANA is a privileged space and a brand with blue letters. It is located on Rua Justino Cruz, the commercial street of excellence, but subtly turns towards the Jardim de Sta. Bárbara, one of the most beautiful gardens in the city of Braga. It occupies the entire ground floor of a building with architectural value. A project of the 50’s of the XX century, which enhances the building adapting it to the surroundings with a glass front. The interior has a charming atmosphere. A decoration with many references to what would be the tea room of its origin. A tradition that is still maintained nowadays, although there is still a doubt in the air. What type of tea is served in the teapot?

Shop History

The history of the Lusitana cannot be dissociated from the history of the famous Lusitana Bakery, on Rua de S. João, which was present in the city from 1896 (mentioned in the Braga´s Commercial Yearbook) until it closed in the early twentieth century. It was the owners of the bakery who, in 1955, decided to open a tea room, taking advantage of the opening of Rua Justino Cruz and the requalification of the surrounding area of the Sta. Bárbara garden. The company Oliveira, Malheiro e Gonçalves took over the management of the new space, which besides the confectionery service, was also a bakery. In 1960, one of the partners, José Barbosa de Oliveira assumed the destiny of Lusitana, a position that would remain until 1988.
Lusitana is an example of how stores can be renewed. Successful for decades, it was going through a difficult period when, in 2011, its current owner, the company Viana & Pinheiro, Lda. sought a solution to honour its tradition. Today, we can still enjoy the excellent pastries, made in-house, but we can also enjoy a light meal on the terrace with our eyes drawn to the flowers in the garden.
