The Shop

If we talk about Pedro dos Frangos we obviously have to talk about chicken. However, this establishment is known for the chicken closed on a spit, roasted on a brazier, having been the first to coo kit like that in the city. It is also a restaurant known for its offer of traditional Portuguese dishes, namely, "cozido à portuguesa" (Portuguese stew prepared with a multitude of vegetables, cabbage, beans, potatoes, carrots, turnips and rice), meat (chicken, pork ribs, bacon, pork ear, various parts of beef) and smoked sausages (chouriço, farinheira, morcela, and blood sausage)) , "tripas à Moda do Porto" (the most representative dish of Porto that dates back to the time of the Portuguese Discoveries is cooked with tripe and fat meat, accompanied with thick slices of dark bread; today instead of bread white beans are used), “roast lamb", "bacalhau à João do Grão" (boiled codfish with potatoes and chickpeas), "rancho" (traditional stew with various ingredients including bacon, chorizo, wine chorizo, the sausage, cabbage, pasta (macaroni), grain, potato and carrot – all the ingredients are cooked in the same water alternately – that water ends up becoming a broth which must be plentiful at the time it is served), among others.

Shop History

The origin of the establishment dates back to 1939 as a grazing house. On November 11th, 1961, Pedro da Silva founded the "Casa do Pedro", a name he owes to its founder, Pedro da Silva. It was in 1978 that the "Casa do Pedro" became "Pedro dos Frangos", the name by which it is known today. The business continued in partnership with two of the employees and, in 1988, already after the death of its founder, José Gonçalves took the leadership of the project. The restaurant has three floors and if it maintains its original façade, its interior architecture has been altered in order to improve the environment and to adapt to the needs of both time and its customers. It is a renowned establishment in Greater Porto, being frequented by locals and tourists, both to taste its dishes on site and to take home, through its take away service. In the celebration of its 50 years, Pedro dos Frangos created a guest book with testimonials from customers and photos. It is one of the places referenced in the "As Tascas do Porto" itinerary, has several diplomas of restoration sites and has been the target, throughout its history, of some articles in the media.
