The Shop
Those who pass around Volta do Duche are not indifferent to the cinnamon aroma from Queijadas da Sapa. It has been like that for many years. With a history that goes back to the XVII century, this establishment offers a privileged view over the National Palace of Sintra and offers visitors the taste of the true Queijadas de Sintra.
Having had a steady presence in Portuguese literature, in the works of Eça de Queirós and Ramalho Ortigão, in this place, it is possible to relive the bucolic and picturesque atmosphere characteristic of the village of Sintra, with the taste of the traditional cakes queijadas da Sapa.
Sapa’s queijadas still present themselves today as a living testimony that has survived the passage of time, constituting itself as a historical symbol of Sintra and an iconic mark of the region.
Shop History
Queijadas da Sapa had their origin in the person of Maria Sapa who settled in Ranholas in 1756, a moment that will have marked the beginning of the industrial production of queijadas, with a daily production of twenty dozen, sold to the gentlemen who went to Sintra.
In 1887 the steam train arrived in Estefânia and Ranholas ceased to be the privileged gateway to Sintra, due to the arrival of the train. In this way, Maria Sapa’s queijadas then move to the Volta do Duche, where since then and, passing from generation to generation, the daily production of the traditional queijadas in Sintra has been maintained until today.
