The Shop
It was the very first Chinese Restaurant in the city and for many years it had no competition, hence the simplicity of its name. It is also known as the “Chinês da Ponte” (Chinese of the Bridge) as it is located close to the upper deck of the Luís I Bridge, overlooking the river Douro and the monastery of Serra do Pilar, on the other side. It maintains the typical Chinese cuisine, from which one must highlight the classics which care most sought after by the regular customers: Beijing Duck, Shrimp or Pork Dim Sum, Silver Beef, among others. The decoration is equally characteristic, in a large and predominantly red room, with high ceilings, extending to a mezzanine.
Shop History
It opened its doors in 1966 and was a pioneer in the city, at a time when Chinese food was an unknown exoticism. It maintained the traditional Chinese cuisine and resisted the competition, which decades later would establish itself in the city. The business has remained in the same family since the beginning: the current managers are the sons of the founder, Mr. Chow Horng Tzer, a renowned businessman, acknowledged both in Portugal and China (he was awarded the degree of Commander by the President of the Portuguese Republic in 2007; he received a Commendation from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in 2012 and he was the founder and first president of the Commercial and Industrial Association of Chinese in Portugal). With a project designed by the Porto architect Francisco Pessegueiro, the restaurant maintains almost the whole integrity of the furniture and the other original decorative elements, typically Chinese, which include statuary and porcelain.
