"Escondidinho" was inaugurated on December 12, 1931: a restaurant out of ordinary routine, with a dining room that reproduces, in its moth, the cozy comfort of eighteenth-century residences, not missing, under the panelled ceilings, the ornamental strength of the old national faience and the colorful ceramic wainscoting, imitating the school of Delft, whose tiles stand out for their extraordinary beauty. The Escondidinho Restaurant has many stories and innumerable remarkable moments since its opening, and was also the first restaurant to obtain two Michelin stars in 1936. It is in this cozy space that you can be delighted with the unique flavors of the gastronomy of Porto: tripes, the Escondidinho cod, the Escondidinho bullpen or the cataplana variety. From the selection of the products to the confection and the art of well serving, everything in there should contribute to a great meal.

Shop History

The history of Escondidinho Restaurant is also the history of architecture in the city of Porto. Inaugurated in 1931, the Escondidinho Restaurant building project was developed by the architects Manuel Marques and Amoroso Lopes, disciples of the architect Marques da Silva.
The furniture of Escondidinho Restaurant was made by the historical Armazéns Nascimento and is still part of the restaurant. The façade maintains the main characterizing elements from the opening, unique in its moth. It is inseparable from the image of Rua Passos Manuel itself.
The Amoroso Lopes project is of notable artistic design, standing out the façade in which, as in the interiors, valuable works of Fábrica Constância, directed by Leopoldo Battistini, are revealed. António Joaquim Silva, after obtaining the right atmosphere for a restaurant that could please a select clientele, also knew how to combine a menu of good taste and quality and that Escondidinho is proud to keep to the present day.
