The Shop
The Teatro Sá da Bandeira is located on the street of the same name, in Oporto´s old town. The property finds itself on and irregular plot composed of 4 zones, these being the main show room, with 786 seating places, the the forecourt and staircase to the dressing room zone.
This recreational space was planned according to the models of the 18th century opera house and theatres, although it displays a more modest design. The main façade blends in with the accommodations which surround it in a neoclassical style. The show room features a circular plan with a polygonal iron cover, divided into four levels, the gallery, the gallery and two floors of balconies with staterooms, these in a white wood structure with ornamental motifs in gilded carving and stucco. The ceiling is painted with stylized floral motifs, and the walls are covered with paper imitating brocade.
The most prominent element is the web, entirely made of wood, composed of a system of stairs, walkways and platforms interposed by a system of ropes and pulleys manually driven to climb and descend scenarios, also these are arranged in wooden frames.
Shop History
On August 4, 1846, it was inaugurated as Teatro Circo, a wooden shed, built by José Toudon Ferrer Catalon for his equestrian company. In 1854 it was demolished to make another one of stone and lime, and in turn replaced, ten years later, in 1858, by the building that plays host to the establishment today. The project was one by the architect Pedro José de Oliveira. The new Theater, which was called Teatro-Circo Príncipe Real, had two entrance doors: the main one by Rua de Santo António (now 31 January), through an arched tunnel that led to a staircase leading to a small atrium. The secondary entrance was made by the new Rua de Sá da Bandeira, today the main entrance. Great figures of national and foreign culture have been and are in that theater, like Sarah Bernhardt, the first presentation in Porto of the Animatograph ("do eletricista Sr. Rousby" on July 17, 1896) and also there, on November 12, 1896, which Aurelio da Paz dos Reis presented the first films made by a Portuguese. It was one of the earliest, if not the first theater in Porto, to use electric lighting instead of gas lighting. In October of 1910 (one week after the implantation of the Republic) it changes the name of Teatro do Principe Real by the Teatro Sá da Bandeira. The significance of this theater in the cultural life of the city of Porto is recorded from its opening to the present day.
